Premise
Red Egg and Ginger is a graduate film from the National Film and Television School (NFTS) that explores the identity struggles of a teenage girl of mixed English and Chinese heritage. The story is primarily set in a Chinese restaurant, which was designed and constructed on the NFTS Main Stage within a tight timeframe of just a few weeks.
Design Development and Construction Progress
To reflect the character’s sense of discomfort, it was essential for the environment to evoke an overwhelming sensory experience. We chose to incorporate the color red prominently throughout the design—not only to heighten the visual intensity, but also to reflect its cultural significance in Chinese tradition.
The design and construction of the set for Red Egg and Ginger took approximately five weeks, from the completion of technical drawings to final set decoration. This project provided an opportunity to develop new skills while building on my existing construction knowledge, applying them in a film set context.
Technical models and drawings were created using Revit and AutoCAD. Revit proved invaluable in expediting the process due to the tight timeline, allowing for rapid adjustments to elements such as doors and walls as the design evolved.
The interactive model also facilitated the set decoration phase, enabling quick and accurate planning. It was instrumental in determining the optimal placement for tables and chairs, as well as assessing the space’s capacity to accommodate the intended number of people.
