Premise
Red Egg and Ginger is an NFTS graduate film focused on the identity struggles of a half-English and half-Chinese teenage girl. The film was set mostly on a Chinese restaurant which needed to be designed and built at the NFTS Main Stage within a few weeks.
Design Development and Construction Progress
To emphasize the character’s sense of discomfort, it was important for the space to have an overwhelming sensation. We decided the color red would have to be very prominent throughout the design, not only because of the over-sensory aspect of it, but also because of the significance in Chinese culture.
The design and set construction for Red Egg and Ginger took about five weeks from beginning to end. From completion of the technical drawings to set decorating, this project allowed me to learn new skills and expand on my previous knowledge of construction while applying them to a film set.
Technical model and drawings were made using Revit and AutoCAD. Using Revit helped expedite the process as the time schedule was very tight. It also allowed me to make quick changes to doors, walls, etc. within the set on as needed.
Having an interactive model allowed me to plan the set decorating aspect of this project relatively quickly and accurately. It helped to account for how many tables and chairs could fit in this space as well as how many people.
